Participation in the National Coalition for Literacy (NCL) is open to organizations and individuals interested in advancing adult education and family literacy in the U.S.

To apply, please review the categories below, complete the application, (we have both PDF and Microsoft Word versions), and submit it by emailing it to ncl@ncladvocacy.org.

Full Members

Criteria

To qualify for full membership, you must be a national not-for-profit organization whose work is primarily focused on adult education (e.g. adult education and family literacy, high school equivalency assessment and instruction, ESOL, immigration education issues, ABE, ASE, etc.). National organizations that are not primarily focused on adult education but do substantial work in the field will also qualify for full membership if:

  • Your organization is engaged in work intended to influence adult education public policy at the federal level;
  • Your organization has a national membership or manages projects that are national in scope and/or your organization maintains a presence in Washington, DC.

Benefits

Full members of NCL have full voting rights and are able to fully participate in the development and adoption of NCL’s official public policy positions. Full members receive all of our public policy updates, including legislative updates and advocacy opportunities. Also, full members may vote on literacy and public policy issues; in doing so, they have the opportunity to make a direct impact on issues and to collectively inform decision makers on the needs of the field. Full members also have the opportunity serve on the board of directors. Full members may participate in our in-person meetings held in Washington, DC to participate in national advocacy efforts, to share innovations that benefit adult education, and to contribute to the success of the organization. Full members may also post messages to our Members Discussion List.

Dues 

Fee on sliding scale (determined by the size of operating budget of the organization or its relevant component applying for membership)

  • Small – < $250,000: $250
  • Medium – $250,001 – $1,000,000: $600
  • Large – $1,000,001: plus: $1000

Associate Members

Criteria

To qualify for an associate membership, your organization must be one of the following:

  • A state, regional, or local not-for-profit organizations with a substantial adult education focus (e.g. adult education and family literacy, high school equivalency assessment and instruction, ESOL, immigration education issues, ABE, ASE, etc.); or
  • for-profit organization interested support improving adult education and family literacy; or
  • A national not-for-profit organizations without a substantial adult education focus but with a strong interest in working with NCL to strengthen adult education.

Benefits

Associate members receive all of our public policy updates, including legislative updates and advocacy opportunities. Associates are welcome to attend NCL Member meetings and other events.  Associates may be invited to participate in other work of the Coalition, for example policy calls and task forces, per the discretion of the President and other appropriate Directors. Associate members may in certain circumstances serve on the board, but only one member that is not a full member may serve in any given year. Associates members may also post messages to our Members Discussion List.

Dues 

Fee on sliding scale (determined by the size of operating budget of the organization or its relevant component applying for Associate status)

  • Small – < $250,000: $100
  • Medium – $250,001 – $1,000,000: $250
  • Large – $1,000,001 plus: $500

Friends

Individuals who wish to support the work of NCL and stay connected to the Coalition’s work are invited to become friends of NCL for a minimum annual contribution of $75.00. Contributions are fully tax deductible.

Benefits

Friends of the Coalition receive all of our public policy updates, including legislative updates and advocacy opportunities. Friends are welcome to attend NCL Member meetings and other events, and may be invited to participate in other work of the Coalition, for example policy calls and task forces, per the discretion of the President and other appropriate Directors. Friends may also post messages to our Members Discussion List.
